Work with Me

Maple_Grove_Financial_Advisor_Phillip_Christenson

It is said that one financial advisor can only serve 100-150 clients well. Between myself and my partner, Jim, we have determined that we can serve about 200 clients and still maintain the level of service and quality that we require. Until then you have a unique opportunity to work with a financial advisor team consisting of a CPA and CFA charterholder, both with a background in finance and tax. Because the number of clients we can serve is not unlimited, we want to make sure it's a good fit before we take anyone on as a new client.

If you haven't read About Me then start there. Otherwise, feel free to read the description below to see whom I serve and how I work. If after reading you feel like it might be a good fit then, by all means, get in touch with me via phone or email for an initial discussion. There is of course no obligation. You can also go to the bottom of this page to use the button to schedule a meeting or call online.

Who I Serve

I've been very fortunate to have been able to work with a great group of people already. What I have found is there are some commonalities between them that might help you determine if I would be a good fit for you. There are two basic groups that I feel have been helped the most by my services:

  1. Young Professionals (Gen Y and Gen X) - Because this is my peer group I can understand their needs and issues they are facing. One of the biggest issues of this group is saving and making sure they are invested the right way. I create and manage all of my clients' portfolios in house, never using a third party investment manager, so you can be sure you are receiving high quality, personalized investment advice.
  2. Pre-Retirees (Within 10 years of Retirement) - Because my planning is comprehensive and oriented towards making sure you don't run out of money in retirement pre-retirees can benefit greatly from my wealth management services. I create a thorough financial plan customized to your specific situation before I invest a dollar of your money. As well, this group does not have to worry about switching advisors during their retirement, as I and my company will be here throughout your retirement and beyond.

My clients are patient, long-term investors. They know wealth isn't built overnight. They know and understand that a comprehensive financial plan is critical to their financial success rather than just trying to achieve the greatest rate of return possible, which inherently carries unnecessary risks.  They are delegators, allowing me to manage their portfolio and their financial plan so that they have the time to pursue their own passions and interests. They don't watch CNBC every day and they realize what it actually is: entertainment, pure and simple. Finally, they are successful, family-oriented, community-minded individuals who realize there is much more to life than money.

What to Expect

First, I am a Fee-Only Financial Advisor and Fiduciary which means I have a legal responsibility to put the interests of my clients first before my own. This is why I don't sell complicated and expensive financial products, I don't sell any products for that matter. Instead you receive objective advice and never feel like you are being sold to.

Second, I believe when people invest it's for a specific reason, like retirement, college, to buy a house or any number of other goals. Investing for the sole purpose of increasing your money is not really a goal. After all, money is not what's important in life, it's what it can do for us and our loved ones. This is why my company's motto is Investing with Purpose. We perform comprehensive financial planning that is unique to each client based on their goals, their purpose. This financial plan integrates tax planning, investments, risk management, insurance needs, and estate planning. Then with your plan as a guide we customize your investment portfolio around your personal situation, needs, and goals. My investment philosophy seeks to remove emotion and subjectivity, instead relying on the academic research, math, and historical data to design globally diversified, low-cost, and tax efficient portfolios. This is all done to give you the best chance of achieving your goals.

With your financial plan and investment portfolio in place I then monitor everything to ensure your success. As life inevitably changes I update your plan and investments to make sure you are always on track. I want to meet and review everything with you at least annually to make sure your plan reflects these changes. If something important comes up we can certainly meet more than once a year.

I love technology if it makes life easier and more efficient for me and my clients. I utilize specific technologies in all areas of my practice and clients see this through their 24/7 secure client access to their accounts. I have many clients that are not in my home state of Minnesota but for those who are here, our office is located in the beautiful Twin Cities suburb of Plymouth (and soon to be Maple Grove). If you are from out of state, we have the technology to work with you without losing the personal touch. In fact, many of our clients who are in-state prefer online meetings as it fits better with their busy schedules.

What I Charge

The financial planning industry is notorious for hidden fees which is why I am proud to keep my fees as transparent as possible. I charge a small fee based on the amount of assets I manage. This fee ranges from 1.5% down to 0.25%.

These fees are billed directly from the portfolio and if at any time the engagement is ended you will receive a prorated portion back for what has not been earned. There are never any cancellation fees, account closing fees, or other unnecessary charges. I believe this fee structure best aligns both our interests, which is to grow your wealth. If you'd like an estimate for your personal situation please just reach out, I'd be happy to provide it.

I would also like to point out that I never take custody of your assets and am independent of any specific financial institution. This is important because it protects you, the investor, from theft and fraud.

Most importantly we are a team. I don't mean everyone at my office, that's a given. I mean you, the client, and me. Good financial planning and investment management takes hard work, patience, and trust. This all happens over time as we work together. I look forward to being a part of your team.
